Dealing with Asthma….A lifestyle change for me.

Figure A shows the location of the lungs and airways in the body. Figure B shows a cross-section of a normal airway. Figure C shows a cross-section of an airway during asthma symptoms.

The graphics in this post and brief synopsis below are from the National Heart, lung and blood Institute

Asthma (AZ-ma) is a chronic (long-term) lung disease that inflames and narrows the airways. Asthma causes recurring periods of wheezing (a whistling sound when you breathe), chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing. The coughing often occurs at night or early in the morning.

Asthma affects people of all ages, but it most often starts during childhood. In the United States, more than 25 million people are known to have asthma. About 7 million of these people are children.

Overview

To understand asthma, it helps to know how the airways work. The airways are tubes that carry air into and out of your lungs. People who have asthma have inflamed airways. This makes them swollen and very sensitive. They tend to react strongly to certain inhaled substances.

When the airways react, the muscles around them tighten. This narrows the airways, causing less air to flow into the lungs. The swelling also can worsen, making the airways even narrower. Cells in the airways might make more mucus than usual. Mucus is a sticky, thick liquid that can further narrow the airways.

This chain reaction can result in asthma symptoms. Symptoms can happen each time the airways are inflamed.

Sometimes asthma symptoms are mild and go away on their own or after minimal treatment with asthma medicine. Other times, symptoms continue to get worse.

When symptoms get more intense and/or more symptoms occur, you're having an asthma attack. Asthma attacks also are called flareups or exacerbations (eg-zas-er-BA-shuns).

Treating symptoms when you first notice them is important. This will help prevent the symptoms from worsening and causing a severe asthma attack. Severe asthma attacks may require emergency care, and they can be fatal.

Looking back over these last months I realize I have been dealing with this since October and possible even as early as August of this year and prior to that I am not sure.  And to say the least, I am on a terrible learning curve as to how to manage this disease.

While many Asthma attacks can be triggered by environmental triggers i.e. pets, smoking, dust, vacuuming, cold weather, the main culprit in my situation are bacterial infections—getting sick, and the cold weather…

My issue has been trying to figure out which is the cold symptom and which is the Asthma.  Both issues cause excess mucous to be produced and terrible chest coughing.

This past few days has been a roller-coaster and I am still trying to recover. I am running into a potential health hazard for me.  I will get sick, end up missing church services, get better, and then go back to helping out at church, get exposed once again and then end up getting sick.  My immune system is not strong enough to handle exposure to regular germs like most people.  It seems the slightest germ attacks me viciously.

On the 2nd of January, after having been healthy for about a week, I went back to church on a Wednesday to help out in our children’s program called Kings Kids.  I enjoy the program, we have on average about 80 students each week and then in my classroom we have about 10 students sometimes more sometimes less.  The class rooms are about 8’ by 10’ in my estimation.

By Friday myself and a few of my children were feeling sick and by Sunday we were a sinking ship.  Several children had fevers, one was throwing up.  Thankfully I had some medication left from a while back that my Dr. had given me to use in my Nebulizer breathing machine. I started taking some Monday and used two, Tuesday I used 3 and I had one dose left that I was going to use Wednesday evening.  I was having some difficulty breathing Wednesday evening, and took the dose that night after church.  That night sleeping was miserable.  So much coughing, having to try and stack up pillows to sit up and I was running out of my puffer inhaler.  In hindsight I see, based on having scoured the internet about Asthma episodes that my last dose of nebulizer was not having any effect because my Asthma had become so severe…I just didn’t know what was to come.

 Thursday was probably the worst day I have ever had.My breathing ability had gotten so bad that I couldn’t walk across the house without breathing heavily.  By heavily I mean like you see those people run the Boston Marathon and they cross the finish line and they bend over gasping for breath and collapse on the ground trying to get enough oxygen.  That would be me…..and then it became that way just sitting on the couch not doing anything.  I couldn’t talk to my children every word I would speak I had to stop afterwards and try and get enough air to say the next word. I have never been so scared that I was going to die as I was that day into night.

I had called my husband and told him I did not think I could make it through the weekend to get to the Dr.  I knew my situation was bad, I just didn’t know how bad…I didn’t know what the severe symptoms were to watch out for.  I am seeing an Intern Specialist(not that he is an intern…NO, he has been in practice for 25 years) not an Asthma specialist  He was able to get an appointment for Friday morning.  Now I just had to make it through Thursday evening.  I had my emergency inhaler, however, it is the only one that does not have a counter so I did not know how much was left.  The canister felt less than half full.   I was trying to not use it during the day because the night time is soooo much worse with all the coughing. I needed to go pick up pizza for the kids to eat about 3 min. from the house for dinner.  I made one of my son’s go with me and when we got in the car I told him how to call daddy on the phone in case something happened…this is how scared I was.

I used my inhaler once late in the evening prior to going to bed around 10pm.  You are supposed to use two puffs but I used one to save it for any attacks during the night.   I was able to sleep for two hours and then hit with a horrific cough attack.  I awoke at about midnight and Tim was still up working.  I went out and sat in our recliner hoping that sitting up would help and tried to lean on a pillow next to my head.  At about 2am I thought I would try again to lay down.  I had taken one more puff and the last puff from an older inhaler I had and was able to fall asleep until morning, praise the Lord.

Friday, yesterday, I went in and the nurse took my oxygen reading.  At rest the oxygen level was at 87% the normal, where it is supposed to be, is 94% minimum.  And my reading was at rest, it is only supposed to get low if you are active.  I can only imagine what my oxygen level must have been the day before when I could not breathe at all.  The Lord was truly watching over me. I should have been in the back of an ambulance heading to the  ER and them pumping me full of steroids and oxygen.

I was able to get prescriptions for my nebulizer which should last me easily two months, and prescriptions for two more inhalers.  Just in the nick of time if you ask me.  It just overwhelms me to know now how bad I was on Thursday night. It has me crying just thinking about it.  If you look at the picture below you will see this handy chart to help manage your Asthma.  You always want to be in green, that is ideal.

Then there is yellow caution, I guess if you will kind of like a traffic light.  Following next is red….you are in a serious state…and if you look below that is DANGER….this was me….If I had only seen this on Thursday, I would have done things a little differently. I can look at this now and see I have not been in the green zone yet and at least I now know what the symptoms are of the different zones and can take action immediately.  I think you only need to have one bad Asthma episode to know what a bad one is and never want to go there again.

So I am hoping I am on the way to actually managing my Asthma and in the meantime I need to make some decisions with my husband as to whether or not I should continue working in this capacity at my church and find other avenues to help minister to others.

If you would join me in praying that the Lord would continue to watch over me and keep me safe and turn this disease around so that I can have a healthy quality of life.  Thank you so much.

Columbine Students Father 12 Years later

Pin It

COLUMBINE STUDENT'S FATHER 12 YEARS LATER !!

Guess our national leaders didn't expect this. On Thursday, Darrell Scott, the father of Rachel Scott, a victim of the Columbine High School shootings in Littleton, Colorado, was invited to address the House Judiciary Committee's subcommittee. What he said to our national leaders during this special session of Congress was painfully truthful.

They were not prepared for what he was to say, nor was it received well. It needs to be heard by every parent, every teacher, every politician, every sociologist, every psychologist, and every so-called expert! These courageous words spoken by Darrell Scott are powerful, penetrating, and deeply personal. There is no doubt that God sent this man as a voice crying in the wilderness.. The following is a portion of the transcript:

"Since the dawn of creation there has been both good & evil in the hearts of men and women. We all contain the seeds of kindness or the seeds of violence. The death of my wonderful daughter, Rachel Joy Scott, and the deaths of that heroic teacher, and the other eleven children who died must not be in vain. Their blood cries out for answers.

"The first recorded act of violence was when Cain slew his brother Abel out in the field. The villain was not the club he used.. Neither was it the NCA, the National Club Association. The true killer was Cain, and the reason for the murder could only be found in Cain's heart.

"In the days that followed the Columbine tragedy, I was amazed at how quickly fingers began to be pointed at groups such as the NRA. I am not a member of the NRA. I am not a hunter. I do not even own a gun. I am not here to represent or defend the NRA - because I don't believe that they are responsible for my daughter's death. Therefore I do not believe that they need to be defended. If I believed they had anything to do with Rachel's murder I would be their strongest opponent

I am here today to declare that Columbine was not just a tragedy -- it was a spiritual event that should be forcing us to look at where the real blame lies! Much of the blame lies here in this room. Much of the blame lies behind the pointing fingers of the accusers themselves. I wrote a poem just four nights ago that expresses my feelings best.

Your laws ignore our deepest needs,
Your words are empty air.
You've stripped away our heritage,
You've outlawed simple prayer.
Now gunshots fill our classrooms,
And precious children die.
You seek for answers everywhere,
And ask the question "Why?"
You regulate restrictive laws,
Through legislative creed.
And yet you fail to understand,
That God is what we need!

"Men and women are three-part beings. We all consist of body, mind, and spirit. When we refuse to acknowledge a third part of our make-up, we create a void that allows evil, prejudice, and hatred to rush in and wreak havoc. Spiritual presences were present within our educational systems for most of our nation's history. Many of our major colleges began as theological seminaries. This is a historical fact. What has happened to us as a nation? We have refused to honor God, and in so doing, we open the doors to hatred and violence. And when something as terrible as Columbine's tragedy occurs -- politicians immediately look for a scapegoat such as the NRA. They immediately seek to pass more restrictive laws that contribute to erode away our personal and private liberties. We do not need more restrictive laws. Eric and Dylan would not have been stopped by metal detectors. No amount of gun laws can stop someone who spends months planning this type of massacre. The real villain lies within our own hearts.

"As my son Craig lay under that table in the school library and saw his two friends murdered before his very eyes, he did not hesitate to pray in school. I defy any law or politician to deny him that right! I challenge every young person in America , and around the world, to realize that on April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School prayer was brought back to our schools. Do not let the many prayers offered by those students be in vain. Dare to move into the new millennium with a sacred disregard for legislation that violates your God-given right to communicate with Him. To those of you who would point your finger at the NRA -- I give to you a sincere challenge.. Dare to examine your own heart before casting the first stone!
My daughter's death will not be in vain! The young people of this country will not allow that to happen!"

- Darrell Scott

Do what the media did not - - let the nation hear this man's speech. Please send this out to everyone you can.

Journaling with your children…..

Pin It

I thought I had posted about this a while back but as I looked back in my blog I see I had missed it.  I joined Pinterest last year and it has been wonderful to be able to save pictures of ideas I would like to do with my family or meals I would like to cook.

Anyhow, one of the ideas I pinned was about a journal to do with my daughter.

I'll make it Nana & Me Journal - Write letters back and forth with your kids. Ask a question, answer a question. Will hopefully become a book of memories to treasure for a lifetime!

                                 Source Pinterest

The idea is that you start writing back and forth to each other and have a book of memories to last a lifetime.  So back in August I got my stuff together and made my own and here are a few pictures.

DSC00778 DSC00779

I used one of my own fonts and printed the cover out on Microsoft Word and then went to the store and found a scrapbook paper that I liked.  I then covered the outside cover with clear contact paper and voila…..we have a wonderful journal that we keep in touch.  Now mind you we have a great relationship verbally and talk all the time.  This just supplements the open communication that we already have.  Sometimes there are concerns or questions that are just easier to write down than to express out loud.  This is just another way for us to talk and work through any thing.

And this is not just for my daughter and I, when my boys are older I plan on doing the same thing with them as well!

I hope you try this out with your children!!

Just tidbits the Lord has laid on my heart

Pin It

Repost from my old blog: September 16,2010 2:46pm

We had a sermon on the 12th dealing with the Sin of Pride.....
I have to say, I am blessed with one of the best Pastor's God has ever gifted with the talent of sharing God's Holy word!!!!  I won't say I have THE best, only because ya'll would immediately write back to say Noooo, I have the best Pastor...or my Husband is the best Pastor...

Now the sermon was about David and his sin of pride in wanting to number his people....but the nugget in the sermon for me that day was the part about Ornan
1Ch 21:22  Then David said to Ornan, Grant me the place of this threshingfloor, that I may build an altar therein unto the LORD: thou shalt grant it me for the full price: that the plague may be stayed from the people.
1Ch 21:23  And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering; I give it all.
Ornan surrendered everything and without hesitation.  Ornan would have done so even had the King not been willing to pay him money for these items.....

Our Pastor said that aside from Jesus, Ornan was probably the greatest surrenderer in all the bible.  The concept of surrender is a familiar one to all of us....we must decrease in order to increase, we must surrender our fleshly desires in order for the Lord's will to take over our life....

I don't know about anyone else and their walk with the Lord, but as for me, it is my fervent desire, my passion, an all consuming flame to surrender my life to the Lord...to let him use me as he would...to let the Lord be the one in control of me...that I am just here to make sure that His temple is maintained in proper working order that He might be able to work through me.

Now, I know that in some areas of my life it is very easy to surrender to the will of God....Childbearing for instance....I made up that decision (HA....see I like to think I made the decision but it is really the Lord who made that decision) to leave the number of children I would have up to the Lord years ago.....

I can surrender my thoughts about having some huge house and a nice piece of property to live on....I don't need it, don't need the taxes that come with that...I just need a place to live humbly for the Lord and not have to fill it up with material possessions.....

However, as with most of us, there are areas that we can readily, and not so readily, admit that we have not surrendered all to the Lord.  My one big, blaring area, at least to me is my area of submission....The Lord knows my desire in this area.  I have been working on this for a while....like really focusing on it for about the last nine months or so.  I had a wonderful long talk with my Pastor last night where I was able to really get a better understanding of what this meant. This area of submission is something that I desire so much and I know the Lord is helping me in this area. It is one of the main areas that I speak about first to the Lord each day in my concentrated prayer time.  I almost feel as if I can step out of myself so to speak and look down at where I am at and see how close I am getting to where the Lord would have me to be.

I have just felt so convicted in this area, that I want it all surrendered to the Lord, that the Lord would be so blessed and so beaming that this child of his was following the way she should the teachings set before her.  I would like to be an example of Ornan who surrendered her life for the Lords use without worry of the consequences because of my flesh getting in the way.

Anyone else have issue with talking too much when trying to get your point across....???? Yep, that would be me some of the time...most of the time.....mind you, I am using biblical references to back up my side whatever the conversation may be...
My Pastor reminded us ladies in a sermon two weeks ago that we were to be quiet and not talk so much....ouch, ouch, ouch.... I need to let my chaste behavior win my husband, my meek and humble spirit, my actions and not my words be the blessing that they need to be to my husband.....

I can only pray that by hearing this sermon about surrendering and two sermons about the wife and the husbands roll in a marriage all within a very short period of time....that the Lord is using these tools to help guide me in the right direction..... and is answering my prayers and putting my desires into action by being accountable...by being transparent.

I need to give up my festering wounds on the inside and frustrations that my husband and I are not on the same page spiritually and give up my resentments because of this so that the Lord would see me surrender completely in this area....If I am not holding onto resentments and am instead going along with being meek and humble and not withholding showing the love that is to be my husbands as commanded in the bible.....Now mind you, I love my husband to the ends of the earth...but with those littler resentments...it is so easy to say..."nope, not gonna make those oatmeal raisin cookies you like so much!"....just not doing those loving things I would normally do....do you see what I am talking about....

I want to glorify the Lord in my love for my husband, I want to glorify the Lord in my submission to my husband, I want to glorify the Lord in the surrender of my life to following his Word and his Will for my life by obeying what he has written out for us all.

ok...enough of my ramblings...just needed to get it down on paper so to speak~

Entering the next change of life….

Pin It

I think the main thing that is on my mind and I feel lead to share with other women out there though is that I have realized this last weekend that I have started Perimenopause……

Yep, the young age of 44, 45 in October.  I knew all about Menopause, I thought, but didn’t really know anything about Perimenopause but boy have I read up on it this last weekend while away camping.

I think I have been in denial or just not wanting to acknowledge that something was happening for several months….I think at least since, November of last year.  I had just seen Dr. Oz’s new show one after noon and this was the topic of the show: Do you have Perimenopausal Rage?

I have had some severe outbursts at my children, they come out of no where and are so extreme and are so unlike me…there has been impatience and irritability as well, the like of which I have never dealt with….I watched the show and saw, myself in the video and was astounded…there was actually something going on….It has been a hard road these last few months since my youngest was born, there are so many hormone changes that come with a newborn……

This last Thursday getting ready for camping, I lost it, I deliberately broke a plate in my kitchen by slamming it down on the counter….it was awful, it is awful every single time I have an outburst, it is a sick feeling in the pit of your stomach when your children are scared of the way you look…you are just a two headed monster….I sat down crying my eyes out and went back to that video and watched it again….

I vowed that before I went camping this past weekend, I would get to the health food store and get myself some help, I need to get my body back in alignment….

It is frustrating to have all this come about so soon after the birth of my youngest and it made it so hard to separate and realize that there was something more going on…I have had the post partum feelings of no libido, just don’t even talk to me about being interested in intimacy…at least that is what my brain was saying, but my actions new better than to do that, I could not do that to my husband….

and there is also that post partum night sweating that happens….but that was at the beginning…I am actually having that again…so that is going on….Oh and lets talk about the insomnia…..my brain is just going and going and going…it just won’t shut off….  And to mix in all of this, I am up at 12am, 2am, 4am, and 6am, give or take 20-30 minutes on each one every night still….so that is not helping with my sleeping….

But when I watched the video again, I realized…AH HA!!!!  IT IS NOT ME!!!!  God is trying to get me to realize it is time to move onto my next phase of life…..so Friday I was mildly depressed as all could be…happy to find out what is going on, sad to realize that I am actually at the end of of those years of bearing children….not that I couldn’t get pregnant again in the coming years, but I had asked God to give me a sign if this was to be my last child, and this is becoming blaringly obvious that things are about to change for me….

I am so blessed to have come across the best sales lady at the health food store, it was her day off and she was there and she took the time to help a blubbering lady out who was distraught over the turn of events of her hormones and desperate to help straighten them out….

I left with a bottle of wonderful food based multivitamins that had the B complex series, the D vitamin that I need as well, the advice to take Evening Primrose Oil, which I actually happen to have had at home already from using during the end of pregnancies…that was recommended at about 1500mg 2x a day and then I could back off once I had a better control on things… I also left with progesterone cream. In addition she said to take the Fish Oil capsules that I had already at home as well. The sales lady, though said, with the evening primrose oil, I would be amazed within 3 days like a load had lifted off of my shoulders….

And here I am on Monday, feeling amazing, like this depression I have been walking around in has abated, that I am once again taking charge of my health, that I am not going to be this awful mom that my children remember.   The irritability, the edginess is gone, I just cannot explain it…I just feel somewhat back to normal!!! I cannot say how thankful I am that there was a program that I saw that made me realize that there was something else going on.  I praise God that he brought back to my attention to help me find the right direction.

The insomnia and night sweats, the lack of libido..turns out these are all symptoms of Perimenopause…it just helps to know that sometimes it is something you don’t have direct control over causing issues, it really is hormones and we need to take care to watch over them to make it safely through to the other side.

I am so ready to embrace this next phase of my life and see where the Lord will bring me, I know it is not going to be easy and may be a balancing act to get hormones in check, especially when I don’t have a doctor, but I have some great resources and by talking about it out loud with other Christian women we can all help each other have the best possible journey and still glorify the Lord.

If you have started this time of your life and have thoughts to share I would enjoy reading what has worked for you or if you have questions feel free to ask those as well!!

God Bless ya’ll~~

Survey Says

Pin It Well the vote is in....

Keep it Natural!!!!

Hubby said, he liked it the way it was and perhaps one day when we are more financially able to deal with maintenance that we could go blond once again...the maintenance issue is not feasible....

but  that being said, he likes it the color it is and maybe wear it a little fuller....so I am purposing to make sure when he gets home that it is down and not up in a bun, it is always nice and wavy when I take it down and we'll see about possibly layering it to have more body...I just don't like to cut my hair.

Thank you for the input, ya'll made me feel much better and I got over that hurdle that Satan tries to put in my way to make me think I need to look different than how God created me!!

God Bless~~

Need some input please…..

Pin It

I am at an age old crossroads for women........should I highlight/die my hair or keep it its natural color

This is a picture of me shortly after we were married in 2001...my blond hair was getting darker but not nearly as dark as it is now and it is highlighted in this picture.....

Now mind you, in the picture above that was before I was saved...now, I do not wear my hair down like that...the most it will be down during the day (usu. once the children are in bed and it is just husband and I then it comes down all the way) is like the picture below which is from June of this year...and 99% of the time it is up in a bun and I wear a headcovering, although you can only see the slightest bit of it on the left side of the picture...it covers the whole backside of my head and is black, but I can order a white one.... plus there was all the make up, jewelry, nail polish etc....I tend not to wear much make up, my skin is so sensitive to breaking out that I tend to stay away from it except special occasions and its juts my wedding band now and cross...I would imagine the glow in that picture comes most from the fact that we had only been married about 2 months when these were taken!

My husband has never said a word about it one way or the other and I bet if I asked him he would say sure go ahead...

So do I highlight and spend the maintenance fee every other month or whatever...or do I just leave it natural...

I need input from both sides so please either comment or email me privately.

Living a Simpler Life

Pin It I just finished reading through a blog yesterday, some of you may have heard of it, Living off-grid at Maple Valley Farm .  This family after much prayer, up and moved to a 40 acre farm with no electricity and have just celebrated a year of living off the grid.

The first part of the blog, or the entries from last year when they first started on their journey, were very enlightening about the daily lives and the community they had moved into, Amish....it was such a blessing to read about her testimony.  The latter entries have more to do with products they are now selling as they turn their farm into a productive income.  It was well worth reading those early entries.

The blog has had me contemplating living simpler.  I know it has always been a desire to have solar power and to have a windmill one day.  I know we will never be off the grid completely, I know that is not my husbands desire and I can give up that desire in my heart.

However, I am sure there is more that can be done to live a simpler life.  What suggestions do you have?  Are you making changes in your family to live a simpler life?  Is it just in the way you decorate your home, the furnishings, the accessories?  Or is it more along what you as a family choose to get involved with or not?

I would love to hear your thoughts on this subject.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ok, so I just did a search for ideas for living a simple life and found this list which can be found at this
website:
However, getting to simplicity isn’t always a simple process. It’s a journey, not a destination, and it can often be a journey of two steps forward, and one backward.
If you’re interested in simplifying your life, this is a great starter’s guide (if you’re not interested, move on).
The Short List
For the cynics who say that the list below is too long, there are really only two steps to simplifying:
  1. Identify what’s most important to you.
  2. Eliminate everything else.
Of course, that’s not terribly useful unless you can see how to apply that to different areas of your life, so I present to you the Long List.
The Long List
There can be no step-by-step guide to simplifying your life, but I’ve compiled an incomplete list of ideas that should help anyone trying to find the simple life. Not every tip will work for you — choose the ones that appeal and apply to your life.
One important note: this list will be criticized for being too complicated, especially as it provides a bunch of links. Don’t stress out about all of that. Just choose one at a time, and focus on that. When you’re done with that, focus on the next thing.
  1. Make a list of your top 4-5 important things. What’s most important to you? What do you value most? What 4-5 things do you most want to do in your life? Simplifying starts with these priorities, as you are trying to make room in your life so you have more time for these things.
  2. Evaluate your commitments. Look at everything you’ve got going on in your life. Everything, from work to home to civic to kids’ activities to hobbies to side businesses to other projects. Think about which of these really gives you value, which ones you love doing. Which of these are in line with the 4-5 most important things you listed above? Drop those that aren’t in line with those things. Article here.
  3. Evaluate your time. How do you spend your day? What things do you do, from the time you wake up to the time you go to sleep? Make a list, and evaluate whether they’re in line with your priorities. If not, eliminate the things that aren’t, and focus on what’s important. Redesign your day.
  4. Simplify work tasks. Our work day is made up of an endless list of work tasks. If you simply try to knock off all the tasks on your to-do list, you’ll never get everything done, and worse yet, you’ll never get the important stuff done. Focus on the essential tasks and eliminate the rest. Read more.
  5. Simplify home tasks. In that vein, think about all the stuff you do at home. Sometimes our home task list is just as long as our work list. And we’ll never get that done either. So focus on the most important, and try to find ways to eliminate the other tasks (automate, eliminate, delegate, or hire help).
  6. Learn to say no. This is actually one of the key habits for those trying to simplify their lives. If you can’t say no, you will take on too much. Article here.
  7. Limit your communications. Our lives these days are filled with a vast flow of communications: email, IM, cell phones, paper mail, Skype, Twitter, forums, and more. It can take up your whole day if you let it. Instead, put a limit on your communications: only do email at certain times of the day, for a certain number of minutes (I recommend twice a day, but do what works for you). Only do IM once a day, for a limited amount of time. Limit phone calls to certain times too. Same with any other communications. Set a schedule and stick to it.
  8. Limit your media consumption. This tip won’t be for everyone, so if media consumption is important to you, please skip it (as with any of the other tips). However, I believe that the media in our lives — TV, radio, Internet, magazines, etc. — can come to dominate our lives. Don’t let it. Simplify your life and your information consumption by limiting it. Try a media fast.
  9. Purge your stuff. If you can devote a weekend to purging the stuff you don’t want, it feels seriously terrific. Get boxes and trash bags for the stuff you want to donate or toss. Here’s my guide on decluttering. Here’s a post on starting small. More on purging below.
  10. Get rid of the big items. There’s tons of little clutter in our lives, but if you start with the big items, you’ll simplify your life quickly and in a big way. Read more.
  11. Edit your rooms. One room at a time, go around the room and eliminate the unnecessary. Act as a newspaper editor, trying to leave only the minimum, and deleting everything else. Article here.
  12. Edit closets and drawers. Once you’ve gone through the main parts of your rooms, tackle the closets and drawers, one drawer or shelf at a time. More here.
  13. Simplify your wardrobe. Is your closet bursting full? Are your drawers so stuffed they can’t close (I’m talking about dresser drawers here, not underwear). Simplify your wardrobe by getting rid of anything you don’t actually wear. Try creating a minimal wardrobe by focusing on simple styles and a few solid colors that all match each other. Read more.
  14. Simplify your computing life. If you have trouble with too many files and too much disorganization, consider online computing. It can simplify things greatly. Read more.
  15. Declutter your digital packrattery. If you are a digital packrat, and cannot seem to control your digital clutter, there is still hope for you. Read this guide to curing yourself of this clutter.
  16. Create a simplicity statement. What do you want your simple life to look like? Write it out. More here.
  17. Limit your buying habits. If you are a slave to materialism and consumerism, there are ways to escape it. I was there, and although I haven’t escaped these things entirely, I feel much freer of it all. If you can escape materialism, you can get into the habit of buying less. And that will mean less stuff, less spending, less freneticism. Read more.
  18. Free up time. Find ways to free up time for the important stuff. That means eliminating the stuff you don’t like, cutting back on time wasters, and making room for what you want to do.
  19. Do what you love. Once you’ve freed up some time, be sure to spend that extra time doing things you love. Go back to your list of 4-5 important things. Do those, and nothing else. Read more.
  20. Spend time with people you love. Again, the list of 4-5 important things probably contains some of the people you love (if not, you may want to re-evaluate). Whether those people are a spouse, a partner, children, parents, other family, best friends, or whoever, find time to do things with them, talk to them, be intimate with them (not necessarily in sexual ways).
  21. Spend time alone. See this list of ways to free up time for yourself — to spend in solitude. Alone time is good for you, although some people aren’t comfortable with it. It could take practice getting used to the quiet, and making room for your inner voice. It sounds new-agey, I know, but it’s extremely calming. And this quiet is necessary for finding out what’s important to you.
  22. Eat slowly. If you cram your food down your throat, you are not only missing out on the great taste of the food, you are not eating healthy. Slow down to lose weight, improve digestion, and enjoy life more. Read more.
  23. Drive slowly. Most people rush through traffic, honking and getting angry and frustrated and stressed out. And endangering themselves and others in the meantime. Driving slower is not only safer, but it is better on your fuel bill, and can be incredibly peaceful. Give it a try. Read more.
  24. Be present. These two words can make a huge difference in simplifying your life. Living here and now, in the moment, keeps you aware of life, of what is going on around you and within you. It does wonders for your sanity. Read tips on how to do it.
  25. Streamline your life. Many times we live with unplanned, complex systems in our lives because we haven’t given them much thought. Instead, focus on one system at a time (your laundry system, your errands system, your paperwork system, your email system, etc.) and try to make it simplified, efficient, and written. Then stick to it. Here’s more. Another good article here.
  26. Create a simple mail & paperwork system. If you don’t have a system, this stuff will pile up. But a simple system will keep everything in order. Here’s how.
  27. Create a simple system for house work. Another example of a simple system is clean-as-you-go with a burst. Read more.
  28. Clear your desk. If you have a cluttered desk, it can be distracting and disorganized and stressful. A clear desk, however, is only a couple of simple habits away. Read more.
  29. Establish routines. The key to keeping your life simple is to create simple routines. A great article on that here.
  30. Keep your email inbox empty. Is your email inbox overflowing with new and read messages? Do the messages just keep piling up? If so, you’re normal — but you could be more efficient and your email life could be simplified with a few simple steps. Read more.
  31. Learn to live frugally. Living frugally means buying less, wanting less, and leaving less of a footprint on the earth. It’s directly related to simplicity. Here are 50 tips on how to live frugally.
  32. Make your house minimalist. A minimalist house has what is necessary, and not much else. It’s also extremely peaceful (not to mention easy to clean). More here.
  33. Find other ways to be minimalist. There are tons. You can find ways to be minimalist in every area of your life. Here are a few I do, to spur your own ideas.
  34. Consider a smaller home. If you rid your home of stuff, you might find you don’t need so much space. I’m not saying you should live on a boat (although I know some people who happily do so), but if you can be comfortable in a smaller home, it will not only be less expensive, but easier to maintain, and greatly simplify your life. Read about downsizing your home here.
  35. Consider a smaller car. This is a big move, but if you have a large car or SUV, you may not really need something that big. It’s more expensive, uses more gas, harder to maintain, harder to park. Simplify your life with less car. You don’t need to go tiny, especially if you have a family, but try to find as small a car as can fit you or your family comfortably. Maybe not something you’re going to do today, but something to think about over the long term.
  36. Learn what “enough” is. Our materialistic society today is about getting more and more, with no end in sight. Sure, you can get the latest gadget, and more clothes and shoes. More stuff. But when will you have enough? Most people don’t know, and thus they keep buying more. It’s a neverending cycle. Get off the cycle by figuring out how much is enough. And then stop when you get there.
  37. Create a simple weekly dinner menu. If figuring out what’s for dinner is a nightly stressor for you or your family, consider creating a weekly menu. Decide on a week’s worth of simple dinners, set a specific dinner for each night of the week, go grocery shopping for the ingredients. Now you know what’s for dinner each night, and you have all the ingredients necessary. No need for difficult recipes — find ones that can be done in 10-15 minutes (or less).
  38. Eat healthy. It might not be obvious how eating healthy relates to simplicity, but think about the opposite: if you eat fatty, greasy, salty, sugary, fried foods all the time, you are sure to have higher medical needs over the long term. We could be talking years from now, but imagine frequent doctor visits, hospitalization, going to the pharmacist, getting therapy, having surgery, taking insulin shots … you get the idea. Being unhealthy is complicated. Eating healthy simplifies all of that greatly, over the long term. Read about how to simplify your eating habits.
  39. Exercise. This goes along the same lines as eating healthy, as it simplifies your life in the long run, but it goes even further: exercise helps burn off stress and makes you feel better. It’s great. Here’s how to create the exercise habit.
  40. Declutter before organizing. Many people make the mistake of taking a cluttered desk or filing cabinet or closet or drawer, and trying to organize it. Unfortunately, that’s not only hard to do, it keeps things complicated. Simplify the process by getting rid of as much of the junk as possible, and then organizing. If you declutter enough, you won’t need to organize at all.
  41. Have a place for everything. Age-old advice, but it’s the best advice on keeping things organized. After you declutter. Read more here.
  42. Find inner simplicity. I’m not much of a spiritual person, but I have found that spending a little time with my inner self creates a peaceful simplicity rather than a chaotic confusion. This could be time praying or communing with God, or time spent meditating or journaling or getting to know yourself, or time spent in nature. However you do it, working on your inner self is worth the time.
  43. Learn to decompress from stress. Every life is filled with stress — no matter how much you simplify your life, you’ll still have stress (except in the case of the ultimate simplifier, death). So after you go through stress, find ways to decompress. Here are some ideas.
  44. Try living without a car. OK, this isn’t something I’ve done, but many others have. It’s something I would do if I didn’t have kids. Walk, bike, or take public transportation. It reduces expenses and gives you time to think. A car is also very complicating, needing not only car payments, but insurance, registration, safety inspections, maintenance, repairs, gas and more.
  45. Find a creative outlet for self-expression. Whether that’s writing, poetry, painting, drawing, creating movies, designing websites, dance, skateboarding, whatever. We have a need for self-expression, and finding a way to do that makes your life much more fulfilling. Allow this to replace much of the busy-work you’re eliminating from your life.
  46. Simplify your goals. Instead of having half a dozen goals or more, simplify it to one goal. Not only will this make you less stressed, it will make you more successful. You’ll be able to focus on that One Goal, and give it all of your energy. That gives you much better chances for success.
  47. Single-task. Multi-tasking is more complicated, more stressful, and generally less productive. Instead, do one task at a time.
  48. Simplify your filing system. Stacking a bunch of papers just doesn’t work. But a filing system doesn’t have to be complicated to be useful. Create a simple system.
  49. Develop equanimity. If every little thing that happens to you sends you into anger or stress, your life might never be simple. Learn to detach yourself, and be more at peace. Read more.
  50. Reduce your consumption of advertising. Advertising makes us want things. That’s what it’s designed to do, and it works. Find ways to reduce your exposure of advertising, whether that’s in print, online, broadcast, or elsewhere. You’ll want much less.
  51. Live life more deliberately. Do every task slowly, with ease, paying full attention to what you’re doing. For more, see Peaceful Simplicity: How to Live a Life of Contentment.
  52. Make a Most Important Tasks (MITs) list each day. Set just 3 very important things you want to accomplish each day. Don’t start with a long list of things you probably won’t get done by the end of the day. A simple list of 3 things, ones that would make you feel like you accomplished something. See this article for more.
  53. Create morning and evening routines. A great way to simplify your life is to create routines at the start and end of your day. Read more on morning routines and evening routines.
  54. Create a morning writing ritual. If you enjoy writing, like I do, make it a peaceful, productive ritual. Article here.
  55. Learn to do nothing. Doing nothing can be an art form, and it should be a part of every life. Read the Art of Doing Nothing.
  56. Read Walden, by Thoreau. The quintessential text on simplifying. Available on Wikisources for free.
  57. Go for quality, not quantity. Try not to have a ton of stuff in your life … instead, have just a few possessions, but ones that you really love, and that will last for a long time.
  58. Read Simplify Your Life, by Elaine St. James. One of my favorite all-time authors on simplicity. Read my review here.
  59. Fill your day with simple pleasures. Make a list of your favorite simple pleasures, and sprinkle them throughout your day. List here.
  60. Simplify your RSS feeds. If you’ve got dozens of feeds, or more than a hundred (as I once did), you probably have a lot of stress in trying to keep up with them all. Simplify your feed reading. See How to Drop an RSS Feed Like a Bad Habit.
  61. But subscribe to Unclutterer. Probably the best blog on simplifying your stuff and routines (along with Zen Habits, of course!).
  62. Create an easy-to-maintain yard. If you spend too much time on your yard, here are some good tips.
  63. Carry less stuff. Are your pockets bulging. Consider carrying only the essentials. Some thoughts on that here.
  64. Simplify your online life. If you have too much going on online, here are a few ways to simplify it all. Article here.
  65. Strive to automate your income. This isn’t the easiest task, but it can (and has) been done. I’ve been working towards it myself. Article here.
  66. Simplify your budget. Many people skip budgeting (which is very important) because it’s too hard or too complicated. Read more here.
  67. Simplify your financial life. Article from a financial planning expert here.
  68. Learn to pack light. Who wants to lug a bunch of luggage around on a trip? Here’s an article on using just one carry-on.
  69. Use a minimalist productivity system. The minimal Zen To Done is all you need. Everything else is icing.
  70. Leave space around things in your day. Whether they’re appointments, or things you need to do, don’t stack them back-to-back. Leave a little space between things you need to do, so you will have room for contingencies, and you’ll go through your day much more relaxed.
  71. Live closer to work. This might mean getting a job closer to your home, or moving to a home closer to your work. Either will do much to simplify your life.
  72. Always ask: Will this simplify my life? If the answer is no, reconsider.
